Going Paleo in 2012, Part One

Over the course of my educational career and professional experience I have come across A LOT of diet plans, MLM schemes and other programs promising the world to unsuspecting consumers.  I would really like to say I never fell for any of these but the truth is I have.  I’ve heard all the great pitch lines promising the moon and the stars.  What I have come to realize is that the people that create the change in their lives are those that make a LIFESTYLE change.

You may have heard of the Paleo diet and I can truly say don’t let the quacks sell you on this.  The Paleo Diet is not just a diet it’s a lifestyle.  Let me explain the difference between lifestyle and diet.  Diet means you change a few meals and maybe select different foods.  Ultimately you have NOT changed the way you THINK and are therefore almost guaranteed to fall back into the same routine.  A lifestyle change is filling in not just the diet but also the exercise, the piece of mind and knowledge to completely shift your approach to health.

People that loose 10,15, or 30 pound do so because they change the way they live.  They make physical activity a priority, they make a conscious choice to leave the bad foods behind, and they also research the most effective lifestyle for them and commit to taking small steps to get to the finish line.

In part two of this article I will address how to start your journey into Paleo.  Here is the single most important thing to remember the person that finishes last in a race always does the same thing as the person that finishes first…by placing one foot in front of the other – do stop moving forward, never move backwards.

The Warrior

Just finished watching an amazing movie called the Warrior.  It the story of about family and how the commitment to provide for loved ones pushes us in ways we never though possible.  You have two brothers that have drifted apart one looking to provide for his family and one fighting to bury his shame.  I loved the fights and film work.  A great picture and I hope everyone checks it out.  It a great way to get pumped for 2012!!!

The Victory in Competing

I believe it was the great Carlos Gracie Sr that said "I don't fight the man I fight his movements."  This is true in many regards but its never more applicable than on the Jiu Jitsu competition mat.  The road leading up to competition is littered with distractions and if you're not careful you will fall of the road.  Going into a big tournament like the US Open this weekend is nothing to take lightly.  Many competitors, myself included, have daytime jobs and a personal life which make living the ideal competitor lifestyle that much more difficult. While having a full-time job is great it seems unfair that our passion for the sport may be hindered by our other improtant responsibilities. Nevertheless we strive for gold same as everyone that will dare to step on the sacred mats of the US Open this weekend.  My prayer before each battle is the same "never for victory Lord for I must earn that with the sweat of my own brow, only for the blessing of no injuries to my fellow competitors and that the sun may rise on new day filled with more challenges."
